HAM LAKE, Minn. - Randy Duncan's heart has always been in his garage.

But after someone stole his prized possession, both are now empty.

"It's kind of like seeing your house burn down," said Duncan.

The story starts 35 years ago when Randy came upon a pathetic looking, yet very rare, '57 Chevy wagon.

"I just saw it and I fell in love with it," he said.
So he bought it. And after letting it sit for two decades, he restored the classic car. It took him five years.

"I learned on that car. It's like raising your child and he leaves. You got all that work into it and he's gone," he said.

Investigators believe either Sunday night or early Monday morning; someone stole all that love and hard work.

Deputies with the Anoka County Sheriff's Office were called to the area of 175th and Swedish Drive in Ham Lake after a pickup truck was stopping and starting, almost like it was casing the neighborhood.

When the deputy tried to pull the stolen truck over, the suspect drove off into the woods. He later crashed into a nearby creek.

From there, police believe the man trampled one mile through a wet swampy marsh, until he found his way into Randy's garage.

The man apparently busted through the side door.

Randy believes for the next hour the suspect hid out in his garage.

While drying off and warming up, he apparently noticed the bright yellow Chevy with its keys in it. He had found his getaway car.

It was early Monday morning when Randy's fiancé noticed the car missing.

"The garage door was wide open and the car was gone," he said. "My stomach just went to the ground."

The car and the man who allegedly stole it are nowhere to be found.

"I feel violated. He's in my car. I don't let anybody drive my car," he said.

Investigators believe the suspect also burglarized a nearby home the very same night and are asking the public's for help.

"You'll notice this vehicle once you see it. It's bright yellow and has white rear fins on it, a 1957 station wagon," said Lieutenant Paul Lenzmeier. "You don't see a whole lot of them anywhere."

The classic car also runs very loud, almost like a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. So Randy is hoping if someone heard it between the hours of two and six Monday morning they will call police.

"I want the word out, I want the world to see it," he said.

The classic car is described as a 1957, 150 two door station wagon with a Minnesota tag of 786-270. It is yellow and white with white rear fins.

They say minor, but I've got some bad scratches from the last time a tarp was on my car. :(

It's good that it's been found, though.

I'm sure insurance will cover the damage :) And much better then a totaled car when you put so much work into it :)
